Great piece! This brings back the horror of physical changes that puberty brought, the feeling of people seeing this new body and if it no longer being/representing me the human. It’s such a hard experience to put into words, I think maybe only other women can understand it.

I think you're right about that. This is why I favor the Jaime/Cersei example so much, because it emphasizes how they were so alike as children they were almost interchangeable, except for the issue of sex, and the inequality in the way the sexes are treated made their lives diverge so drastically from one another.

WOW! That is powerful writing. You have brought back so many memories . . . We must fight instead of capitulate! Tell us how to effectively fight . . .

I really wish I had the answers as to how we can help dismantle this system of dismemberment and violence. All I know how to do is call out these dynamics so hopefully women and girls can recognize them more easily.

Thank you so much for writing this. I wish my trans identified daughter would read it. I've always valued and enjoyed having age appropriate critical discussions on topics with my kids. But I can't have that conversation with my Gen Z daughters on this topic. They just can't see the faults I see.

Teenagers are so incredibly brainwashed right now. I have a 17-year-old in my life who passionately repeats all the pro-trans talking points, but then pivoted to talking - at length! - about how awful Dylan Mulvaney is because of the way (s)he trades in reductive stereotypes of femininity. Lots of logical inconsistency in my young ‘uns talking points, but of course any critique I (almost 50) have to add to the subject is automatically transphobic, or at least horribly out of touch.
